Nitrate actually encourages the growth of algae in your fish tank. Some fish feed on this kind of algae - but usually not enough, they do not consume all of it, and some consume none. Nevertheless, you will (from time to time) have to scrub your fish tank clean of the buildup of algae. If you cycle your fish tank using a biological fish tank filtration system, you can certainly create a biological environment. When you have already designed a specific biological habitat, and if you purchase a new biological filtration system, your fishes etc. will not have to adjust.
Remember that certain kind of fish require special modifications to be carried out to the tank in order to ensure that they remain healthy. It could be the ambient water temperature, so you will need to check the water temp every now and then, to ensure that there are no accidents. Other than the temperature, youll need to ensure that the water is aerated; you will be able to get all you need at any of top of the line pet supply stores. Maintaining a fish tank can take quite a bit of effort on your part but once you have done it a couple of times, it will seem easy. The hard part lies in actually putting your thoughts to action and getting to clean up that tank.
OK time to start. Place the aquarium in its final position, set up all the equipment like lights filter etc. but dont plug anything in yet. Clean the tank with clean water. Do not use soap or chemicals. Wash your Gravel or sand until it runs clear. Mix laterite with about a third of your substrate and spread it over the base of the tank. Add the remainder of the substrate covering the base layer evenly and landscaping it as you want it. Put a plate in the bottom of the tank and add your water pouring gently onto the plate to avoid disturbing the laterite. Add your water conditioner to remove any chlorine.
