I wanted to leave you with a few more tips before you get on your way.
There are many ways where small is beautiful; however, in this matter, the opposite may be correct. A big fish tank is always better than a small one because it can show much more diversity and also hold larger size species of fish that are far more interesting than the small ones.
OK time to start. Place the aquarium in its final position, set up all the equipment like lights filter etc. but dont plug anything in yet. Clean the tank with clean water. Do not use soap or chemicals. Wash your Gravel or sand until it runs clear. Mix laterite with about a third of your substrate and spread it over the base of the tank. Add the remainder of the substrate covering the base layer evenly and landscaping it as you want it. Put a plate in the bottom of the tank and add your water pouring gently onto the plate to avoid disturbing the laterite. Add your water conditioner to remove any chlorine.
Usually the fish dont become old and die, but get eaten by others when they grow weak. As macabre as that may seem, thats a fact when it comes to fishes, of course, the tank could always do them in first especially if you havent taken care of it.
OK, you have decided you want to know how to set up a fish tank so that you can get started with your latest passion. You now know and understand that the hobby of keeping an aquarium can not only be a beautiful hobby but a very soothing one as well. Some experts even say that watching fish in an aquarium is very good for your health because of its calming values. The key is to learn how to set up a fish tank before you get too far ahead of yourself.
